Career Journalism Scholarships
These scholarships target high school seniors in the Times' audience area who have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a journalism major in college and career after graduation. The scholarship is worth $2,500 per year and may be renewed annually. Students from these Florida counties are eligible to apply: Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus and Manatee. Application Deadline: Jan. 5. 

 

Intern Scholarships
ONLY students who are HIRED as interns at the Times are eligible to apply for these awards. The scholarship is offered as part of the Times' Summer Internship program. It is worth $3,500 for returning fulltime undergraduate students and $1,500 for returning fulltime graduate students.

The Peterman Scholarship
Sophomore / junior journalism majors at HBCUs are eligible for this scholarship, which provides $6,000 plus a paid summer internship at the St. Petersburg Times (FL). Peggy Mitchell Peterman, who retired in 1996, was a features reporter, columnist and member of the editorial board during her 31 years with the Times. Through her writing, she sought to bring people together by covering community issues that were important to everyone. She also mentored young black journalists at the Times and other media outlets. In 1989, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Black Journalists. She died in 2004. Application Deadline: Nov. 15, with internship application. The Barnes Scholarship
The Barnes Scholarships, offered through the St. Petersburg Times Fund, Inc., were established in 1999 to help college-bound teens who are high academic achievers and who have overcome significant obstacles in their lives and who have financial need. Each of the four winners is eligible to receive up to $15,000 per year for four years to attend any nationally accredited college or university. The scholarship may be used to pay for expenses related to the cost of college attendance. The students must be enrolled full-time and remain in good academic standing to continue to receive the scholarship. Students from these Florida counties are eligible to apply: Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee. Application period: August 1 to October 15.
