Peggy M. Peterman Scholarship

This scholarship is worth up to $6,000 plus paid summer internship at the St. Petersburg Times (FL) for sophomores and juniors at HBCUs.

In her 31 years with the St. Petersburg Times, Peggy Mitchell Peterman worked as a features reporter, columnist and member of the editorial board. Through her writing, she sought to bring people together and she did that by covering community issues important to everyone. She also mentored young black journalists at the Times and other media outlets. In 1989, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from National Association of Black Journalists. She retired from the Times in 1996 and died in 2004. The Peterman Scholarship Program was established in her honor. 

Application deadline 
November 15 (postmarked) for both the Intern Application and the Peterman Scholarship Application. (You may include both in the same envelope.) Click below for the Peterman Scholarship Application form.

Intern application packet should include cover letter, resume and copies of 5 or 6 clips that show the range of your work.

Mail internship packet and scholarship application by USPS to Nancy Waclawek, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg, FL 33731. Indicate on outside of envelope that you are applying for the Peterman Reporting Position.


Winner announced

By Jan. 1, along with an offer of a paid internship.
